What’s in Your Closet?

Who has an overflowing or disorganized closet? Not me…anymore! My closet has had a serious makeover. Just in time to make room for more Summer clothes!

To be honest, my closet wasn’t messy. It was just PACKED and needed some serious organization, but these tips work no matter what your closet “situation” is.

  1. Get rid of what you don’t use. This should be simple, but for some fashion addicts it’s hard to know WHEN it’s time to donate your clothes, shoes, or other closet contents. A good rule is to start with things that don’t fit anymore. Go ahead and get rid of those jeans you’ve been holding on to just in case you gain that ten pounds back…it won’t happen overnight, and if it does, that’s what leggings are for 😊

Remember “A year or more? Out the door!” Anything that’s been sitting in your closet unworn for a year or more, is probably safe to let go.

Side note: Find a good place to donate to. There are women’s shelters, churches, and non-profits that take gently used clothing and will put them in the hands of those who truly need them. When you realize that your donation may give another woman a confidence boost, provide her something to wear for a job interview, or just put a smile on her face, it makes it a lot easier to get rid of things.

  1. Trash the trash. We have all done it, saved a top with a torn strap, a hole, or a stain we swore we would “fix”, but never got around to it. I say this with love…If you can’t fix it today, get rid of it. Donate it to a crafty friend, trash it, just don’t leave it in your closet. These “projects” pile up, taking away valuable closet real estate that could be occupied by clothing you can wear NOW.

Side note: There are tons of re-purposing videos out there that deal with old and/or damaged clothing. You can make pillowcases, purses, blankets, deconstructed tops, and more, all out of old or damaged clothing.

  1. Organizational bins are your best friend. Bins are a must have for me. I like to keep them on the top shelf of my closet. It makes it look cleaner, and just gives me extra storage space I need. If your closet doesn’t have a lot of shelves, you still have organizational options! Regular hangers work great to hold handbags. I also recommend a hanging jewelry organizer. This keeps your jewelry in one place, and the sections are usually see-through, so you can find what you are looking for quickly.

4. Sort and section. This is probably the most important tip I can give, TOTALLY EMPTY YOUR CLOSET. This may sound scary if you are used to just tidying up and have never done a full-blown overhaul. Sort everything into piles so that you can see how much space you need for each “closet category”. Some you may have to “break up”. For instance, if you have a ton of tops, but only one bar to hang them on, consider using a shelf or bin for those tops you don’t wear often instead of trying to squeeze them in. This way your frequently worn tops are easily visible AND accessible. Once you have sorted and decided where everything is going, it’s time to start putting things back!

Side note: This is a great time to literally clean your closet! Wipe down shelves, vac corners, etc.

  1. Maintaining organization is key. After you get everything in their dedicated spaces, take a break and appreciate what you’ve accomplished. After that, imagine having to do it all over again! Maintaining an organized closet is pretty easy. You just have to put stuff where it belongs. Easier said than done sometimes, but it’s worth it!
